Planting Churches and Making Disciples to the Glory of Christ
Missions is not about travel, humanitarian work, or short-term ministry experiences. Missions is the work of making disciples and planting churches where disciples do not exist and where the Church is not found. Missions is about seeing the glory of God proclaimed among all peoples; every tribe, every tongue, every people group.
In March of 2027, Gateway Fellowship Church intends to plant a new church in the village of Cumbre, Oaxaca, Mexico.
We are inviting believers to join us in this effort as we work alongside local pastors, labor toward the establishment of a local church, and help create a lasting gospel witness among an unreached people.
Why the State of Oaxaca?
Oaxaca is a southern state in Mexico and is one of the most strategically significant mission fields in the Western Hemisphere. It is the most culturally and linguistically diverse state in Mexico, home to 158 of the 300 languages in Mexico, and numerous indigenous people groups. Many of these communities remain isolated from strong biblical churches and gospel-centered discipleship.
Simply put, there is tremendous need and tremendous opportunity.
Because of this need, Gateway Fellowship Church currently supports multiple church plants throughout Oaxaca and continues to plant local churches among the peoples of the region.
Cumbre
Why the village of Cumbre?
La Cumbre is a Zapotec village of roughly 800 people located in the mountains of Oaxaca, and is adjacent to many neighboring indigenous communities. Over the last several years, relationships have been established, discipleship has begun, and small groups have already formed within the community. Local favor has been granted, community leaders have welcomed the ministry, and permission has been given to use the community center for church gatherings.
This is not a village where we are arriving without preparation.
God has already opened doors and not just in Cumbre. We are both believing, and seeing, doors opening in the neighboring indigenous communities too. Cumbre has become a gateway to the mountains of Oaxaca.
Church plant GFC Iglesia Centro has been discipling people within the community, laying a foundation for what we believe will become the first of many healthy, indigenous, local expression of God's church.
How can you serve
Church planting requires people willing to use their gifts for the sake of the Kingdom.
We are looking for:
- Dentists and dental hygienists
- Medical professionals
- Teachers
- Translators
- Barbers and hairstylists
- Musicians and worship leaders
- Construction workers
- General ministry volunteers
These skillsets help us connect with the community, serve practical needs, build foundational relationships, and create opportunities to share the gospel.
Interest Meeting
Team Opportunities Short-Term Teams
Short-term teams serve primarily through outreach, community engagement, and ministry activities during the church planting effort. Multiple teams will travel during the spring of 2027.
Costs include airfare, transportation, lodging, meals, ministry supplies, immigration fees, and basic travel insurance.

- $1,600 for teams of 6-9
- $1,500 for teams of 10+

The goal is not to export an American church model.
The goal is not to create disciples of us.
The goal is to see disciples of Jesus raised up among the peoples of Oaxaca and to see a healthy local church established where one does not presently exist.
